NGC2024 Flame and Horsehead Nebula
NGC2024 - January 2021
Televue127is/ASI6200MM/HSO (narrowband)
Orion's belt belt contains this magnificent vista of an emission nebula that takes little imagination to see flame on the left and a horsehead on the right. The negative space forming the horsehead outlined on the centre-right is caused by dust blocking the visible light emitted from the gas behind it. This dust only lets light through (or reflects) the brightest stars, but actually emits quite brightly in the infrared (invisible) spectrum. Narrowband filters were employed in this image to bring out the gas "clouds".
