The Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is a nearby irregular galaxy, and is a satellite of the Milky Way. The Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) is a dwarf galaxy, and the Milky Way's nearest neighbors. They are both easily visible as a faint "cloud" in the night sky of the southern hemisphere.
