Montes Apenninus

Montes Apenninus

The three mountain ranges running along the eastern edge of Mare Imbrium are captured in this image. Clockwise from the top are Montes Alpes, Montes Caucasus, and Montes Apenninus. Three substantial craters stand out in Mare Imbrium: Archimedes (dia. 82 km), Aristillus (dia. 55 km), and Autolycus (dia. 39 km). South of this trio, at the foothills of Montes Apenninus, is where the crew of Apollo 15 landed. West of the Apenninus range are two large craters: Eratosthenes (dia. 58 km) and the rayed crater Copernicus (dia. 93 km).
