Aurora at the VCO October 10 2024

Aurora at the VCO October 10 2024

While searching for the tail of C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan–ATLAS) a wave of aurora took over the skies of the Victoria Centre Observatory. Just before 10:00pm the light auroral show took on a life of its own dancing above the treetops in a dramatic light show even to the naked eye. There was the usual green and yellow of excited oxygen molecules but strong patches of red nitrogen excited molecules appeared as well. Some zero gravity chairs provided an amazing panoramic view. What a show! If you look closely you'll see ghostly images of Mirfak and the Double Cluster in Perseus.
