Comet 17/P Holmes - contoured
October 25 , 2007, 9:00pm PDT
Observatory Hill, Victoria, BC, Canada
This is a 64 colour paletted version of the original image taken on this date. It highlights the rings of similar levels of light, which illustrates the shape of the comet's various parts.
Using my unmodified Canon 30D mounted prime focus on my Meade LX200R operating at f/10, I acquired 76 images and stacked them to produce this resultant image. The core is visible as the brighter feature, and there is also some detail in the gas cloud surrounding this strange looking comet. There also appears to be a faint blue ring around the gas cloud if one looks closely at this image.
Details:
Telescope: Meade LX200R 8" operating at f/10 mounted Alt/Az
Canon 30D mounted at prime focus
Exposures: 76 images at 1 sec
ISO 800, Daylight white balance
Processing:
ImagesPlus 2.82: digital development of Canon Raw to FITS, flat frame applied. Adaptive Addition used for stacking the images, then aggressive Digital Development applied to the resultant image, and conversion of this image to 48 bit TIFF for further processing.
ACDSee Pro 2: convert to 24 bit RGB, image crop, and conversion to jpg.
Corel PhotoPaint X3: produced contoured version of the original image.
