Comet Neowise - Closeup at Dusk

Comet Neowise - Closeup at Dusk

Comet Neowise - July 2020
Televue 127is, ASI6200MM, LRGB
This close-up of the the comet Neowise reveals the three components of the comet: the head, the ion tail (thin, pointed directly away from the sun) and the dust/sublimation tail more reflective of where the comet has been.
Creating the image was interesting because I used a Deep Sky Object mono camera as I was on my way to image a DSO later that night - not the best camera to catch a comet. Image capture involved loading the comet's ephemeris (position over time) data into the telescope mount to guide the scope, and taking separate images using Lum, Red,Green & Blue filters. Because the comet moves differently from the stars through the sky, the exposures were processed to remove the comet from the star background images and remove the stars from the comet images - to create two sets. The sets were then separately aligned, stacked and finally recombined to show both the stars and comet statically in one image.
Ultimately, the image would have been more interesting, if some land reference had been included too, but it was too far below the frame for this close-up.
