Moon Halo 2

This image shows a halo around the moon observed from my back yard in Victoria BC at 10:30 PM PST on Jan 17, 2011. Halos like this originate when the light of the moon is bent passing through hexagonal ice crystals. Note the subtle color of the inner portion and the slightly brighter sky outside the ring.

Tripod mounted T1i camera with a Sigma 10-20mm lens operating at 10 mm focal length.
Exposure of 4 sec. at f/4 .
