The "haystack" solar prominence in Ha

Date: August 27, 2011 12:02PM PDT

Location: Bright Angel Park, Duncan, BC, Canada

Solar observing at the Island Star Party rewarded us with some spectacular prominences and surface features. The Sun had multiple large prominences, some had detached from the Sun's surface with bits floating into space, while others were simple spikes. One giant feature resembled a haystack.

Once processed with the Sobel edge detection method, some wonderful detail was revealed.

Equipment: Hutech-modified Canon T2i dSLR a-focal through a 2.5x Powermate, IDAS VLC filter, & Lunt LS60THa + LS50FHa solar telescope mounted on an HEQ5 tracking mount.

Exposure: 1/60 second at ISO 1600
Bandpass: <0.55 Å

Processing: ACDSee Pro 4 - Sobel method edge detection applied; modest contrast stretch and colour adjustments, crop and resize.
