The Rabbit Emerges

The Rabbit Emerges

It was day 20 of the Moon and I was observing the features along the terminator, that border between light and darkness. Remarkable shadows, as they say one of the best times to observe the Moon is when the terminator is visible. From time to time I think about what peaked my interest in Astronomy and I still think about that Archaeoastronomy course I took over 17 years ago. What people saw with their naked eyes in the night sky sparked their imaginations and as humans we like to make sense of patterns and give them characteristics that we are familiar with. Folklore has identified many patterns in the face of the Moon. The Man, The Woman, The Crab, ... even Mr. Bill (Saturday Night Live). One of my favourite interpretations is the Rabbit in the Moon. This morning the Rabbit was very clearly leaping in to the light from the darkness.
